The weather has turned to normal and now we are enjoying nice and comfortable days with temperatures only a little more than 20 C degrees. Amounts of Lesser Whitethroats are rising daily and today we got first Rueppell's Warbler and Common Whitethroats for this spring. First Short-toed Eagles have been seen while doing trap rounds as well. Chiffchaff is still the most common species ringed but soon it may turn to curruca. We have been so busy while ringing and working with some other things that we don't have any mistnets on yet. So next thing we'll do is to put all twenty mistnets on.

Rüppell's Warbler

The new apartment for ringers is about to be ready and I guess we are able to leave the city and move to the sanctuary during this week. Although it will be a bit longer way to internet access after the move, I will try to update this blog at least once a week from now on.

28.2.2010 Northern winds PDF Tulosta Sähköposti

Sardian WarblerNorthern winds are still blowing in Eilat and only birds that can be seen having some migration are Steppe Eagles. Migrating passerines are still quite few and there's not many birds to ring. I use to visit northern beach almost every evening but only some flocks of Garganeys, Shovelers, Pintails and Shelducks are seen. The first Black Storks were seen yesterday evening and also the amounts of Slender-billed Gulls have risen during the last couple of days. Maybe the best bird in the beach is a Brown Booby which can be seen daily. Also some Western Reef Herons are hanging there as usual.

Isabelline WheatearOn Sunday 28.2, the Purim-celebration day, wind turned and blew from south for the whole day. The wind got even so strong that now we had some new holes in the traps and Monday 1.3 passed by mostly by repairing these damages. We have also been working with the new apartment for ringers which is located in the ringing station. That will be ready soon and we can probably move during this week. This is a good thing as after that we can do more ringing and if there are no birds to ring, very good birding spots are close.
